Coconut Can Animation Script

Besides our normal load of client related work, we'll often kick around ideas at the office. Funny products, promotions, ideas for websites... and in this case a script for a potential animation. Our concept was to create a story and animation where an overly excited boss pitches and obviously ridiculous idea to his marketing manager.

With help and advice from Paul's brother Tom as well as Paul's friend Gio, we've finally arrived at this point in the script. With time running short and with more work looming in the distance (as well as with the 5 year Paul Kiesche Design anniversary upon us), we thought it'd be nice to share what we've come up with so far.

Hopefully you enjoy and let us know what you think in the comments!

INT. MARKETING MANAGER OFFICE

The MANAGER, Kelly, a 40 yr/old female in business clothes,
sits looking at a monitor, working on something we can’t see as she talks on the phone.

MANAGER
Hey John, it's Kelly again, we decided to go with a satin varnish on the 100% recycled stock... Yeah, that will go great with our new 100% healthy soda. Also, the deadline has moved up again, yep, again, so the printing...

 The...

The COMPANY OWNER rushes in. He is a 60 yr/old man with a receding hairline, dressed in suit and tie.

OWNER
Kathy, What are you doing, (not waiting for an answer), great, stop, I have an exciting new project I'll need all your attention on!

MANAGER
Yeah, I'm gonna need to call you...

OWNER hangs up phone for her

MANAGER
Should I stop the 7 other projects you needed "yesterday"?

OWNER
slams down a coconut on the table
This, is the next big thing! This is our “tomorrow.”
The next iPod, Phone, Pad, whatever.

MANAGER
A coconut? They already make these.

OWNER
THIS is the future of the company.
Go ahead pick it up. Feel it.

MANAGER
picks it up.

OWNER
Touch it, know it.

MANAGER stares at OWNER not blinking

OWNER
This is our new soda can.

MANAGER
I wasn't aware we were creating a new...

OWNER
Goes to a window and looks out.
During this morning's focus group, one of the respondant's complained.
She had difficulty with the tabs on our cans. You’re not getting it, are you?
It's genius.
Coconuts have been around for millions of years and didn't come with tabs.
So, we remove the tab.
We'll have the first tabless can.

MANAGER
So, how do you...

OWNER
Open it? Exactly.
This will put us on the map!

MANAGER
looks confused.

MANAGER
No.

OWNER
Run with it. Wow me.
 Ideas. Go...

MANAGER
picks up the coconut.
How are we going to sell a soda can
 that people can’t open?

OWNER
What do I pay you for?
People don’t want anything that’s easy. How many times do you want the guy that doesn’t want you? Why climb mountains, or ride bulls. Rubics Cube, 3d Puzzles, the Comedy of Dane Cook… these are all things that are difficult and challenging, and hard to get, and people eat it up.

MANAGER
I...

OWNER
This thing will sell itself.

MANAGER
…Dane Cook?

OWNER
Grabbing the coconut from the Manager.

“The first hard to get soda.”

OWNER

Why did I hire you?

MANAGER
under her breath
Why do I work here?

(Aloud) I suppose we can mock something up. May be even develop a special key like a SPAM can, or spout that only opens our cans.

OWNER
(Cutting Manager off)
Great. Great. Alright. Good. So where are we on this?

MANAGER
What, the coconut can thing?

OWNER
Yes

MANAGER
The thing you just mentioned to me right now?

OWNER
Yes, what is the status?

MANAGER
Oh, we are on it sir. I think we might even be ahead of schedule.

OWNER
Excellent!
Go. Work your magic. Make it sing!
 Brand. Graphics. Internets, Facebook.
My Wife likes blue and orange. Work on that. This is gonna be huge.

(The OWNER exits)

MANAGER
grabs the coconut, bangs it on the table once and tosses into the garbage, and goes back to looking at the screen.

On Screen WANT ADS.

  1. "Brilliant!" Oops, that's already using in advertising...
"CocoNUTTY!" Sad thing is, I can actually imagine this exchange happening thousands of times in offices just this week...
Can't wait to see the final product.
